The wood
“Each tree not only has a different size and shape, but color and character, and each board from each tree has a distinctly different personality.”
— Mira Nakashima
I work with walnut, maple, cherry, black limba, zebra wood, and teak. These hardwoods are perfect for the kitchen: strong, not as porous as softwoods so they don’t absorb food remains, making them safer and easier to clean.
Walnut
Walnut is a beautiful hardwood that has rich colors and burls with light accents. It is my favorite wood to work with. Along with its rugged, handsome looks, fine texture and warm luster, walnut has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and is considered to have solid dimensional stability after drying.
Maple
Maple has a close-grained structure, and has excellent durability and resistance to bacteria. Its hard structure provides a perfect surface for food. Its beautiful pattern is sought after for musical instruments and an incredible variety of wooden objects.
Cherry
Cherry is also a close-grained hardwood with a rich color perfect for kitchen and serving use. Cherry wood has a smooth, satiny grain that can be enhanced with finishing, and adds a touch of elegance to its surroundings.
